Does Weed Cause Heart Attacks? Here’s How You Spot a Trash Study 🗑️

CNN Health Is Stirring Up Pot Propaganda with Another Clickbaity Headline—Let’s Talk About Why The “Science” Behind This Article Doesn’t Hold Up

Everyone keeps tagging me in this article from CNN Health titled: “Marijuana use raises risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke, studies say.

…So let’s talk about it!

Let me teach you how to identify good studies versus trash studies. 🚮

The timing of this study seems a little weird, don’t you think?

What are the odds we get some Reefer Madness the day before Election Day? When Ohio is set to vote to be the 24th state to have legalized adult use of cannabis?

When assessing a study, the first thing to ask is who is conducting and funding the study. That’s important.

You want to be on the lookout for potential negative bias from the donors & researchers.

Now, The American Heart Association—about 20% of their donors are corporations and Big Pharma.

But the other 80% are individuals, states, and nonprofits.

A quality study can also be replicated. Some things just happen. So were the results chance or actual evidence that the claim is true?

This particular study with a click-baity headline cannot be replicated. It’s actually an unpublished study that just used observational data.

Moreover, this study hasn’t been peer reviewed or accepted by the scientific community. 🚩

They didn’t create an experiment to find these answers. They took some data that was on a government website—a public database—and analyzed that data to answer the question.

There are some big oversights. Like, how were the people in the data consuming cannabis?

And really, it was a very oversimplified argument to a very complex issue like the heart.

Bottom line: We need a real study with proper controls to really prove what this study is saying.

Bless the blunt
