Not So Fast: GOP Senator Blocks Hemp THC Ban from Federal Spending Bill
LEGAL CANNABIS IS STILL FRAGILE…AND IT’S UP TO US TO STAY INFORMED, STAY LOUD, AND PROTECT THE PLANT
This week, we saw a potentially big win for hemp lovers…and a much-needed pause on yet another misguided government move.
In case you missed it, a federal proposal that would’ve banned hemp-derived THC products (like Delta-8, Delta-10) from being sold nationwide just got STOPPED in its tracks.
Senator John Boozman (R-AR) stepped in during the Senate Agriculture Committee’s review of a key 2025 spending bill and successfully blocked the anti-hemp amendment.
Let’s talk about why this matters—and why I’ve been saying we need to stay vigilant.
Hemp THC: Loophole or Legit Progress?
Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC) became legal. That unlocked a whole new market for hemp-derived cannabinoids—like Delta-8 and others—that can produce a high, but remain federally legal under current law.
Now that those products are everywhere (smoke shops, gas stations, online…), some lawmakers want to shut it all down, fast. They’re calling it a loophole. But I call it a result of not understanding the plant and how it works.
A Senator Says “Hold Up”
Here’s what just happened: A late-stage amendment tried to ban intoxicating hemp products by slipping the language into a must-pass agriculture bill.
But Senator Boozman wasn’t having it. He argued that if we’re going to change hemp laws, it should happen through the Farm Bill—not through last-minute edits buried in a spending package.
Whether you support Delta-8 or not, this was a crucial reminder that how laws are made matters just as much as what they say.
Federal Waffling + State Crackdowns: facing prohibition vibes Yet again
This anti-hemp push is coming at the same time the DEA is stalling on rescheduling cannabis, despite the FDA and HHS recommending it be moved out of Schedule I. Patients, advocates, and industry leaders were cautiously hopeful… but now the momentum feels like it’s slipping backward.
And it’s not just at the federal level.
Texas lawmakers just passed a bill to ban hemp-derived THC products statewide, despite protests from veterans, small businesses, and patients who rely on them. The legislation now awaits the governor’s signature.
This is a pattern we’ve seen before: when progress starts to build, the backlash kicks in. First the feds waffle, then the states start banning. The rug can be pulled out fast.
One minute we’re talking progress; the next, it’s prohibition vibes all over again.
A Wake-Up Call for our Community
This win doesn’t mean we’re in the clear.
Lawmakers are already working on the next Farm Bill, and hemp THC regulation will be a hot topic. Make no mistake: Some people want these products gone. Period.
And if you’ve been following me for a while, you already know: Legal cannabis isn’t guaranteed. It can disappear overnight.
It’s happened before. Cannabis was legal in the U.S. until political agendas and fear-based narratives—thanks to Nixon and then Reagan—changed everything. If we don’t speak up and stay engaged, history can repeat itself.
Final Thoughts
This is an important reminder that legalization is not permanent! Our rights can be rolled back, and have been before…it’s happening before our eyes as we speak.
Stay informed. Stay active in your advocacy. And always, always question who benefits when cannabis access is threatened.
Bless the blunt
