Why I’m Not Celebrating Cannabis Rescheduling

The DOJ Plans to Move Cannabis From a Schedule I to a Schedule III Substance—Here’s What You Need to Know

I see a lot of celebrations happening in the industry for the Schedule III news.

And while it may seem like progress for the government to FINALLY admit that cannabis has medical value…

Here’s why I am a hater, and I’m always gonna be a hater when it comes to this.

I know too much. My book club students know too much.

We know what happens here based on the history.

Is the government trustworthy when it comes to this plant? Absolutely not.

They went after sick people after a state legally passed it! They went after people that were following their own state’s law to prosecute them under Federal law.

Do I trust this government to do the right thing? Absolutely not.

Is this a celebration? FUCK NO.

Maybe it’s a win for 280E (the IRS tax code that forbids standard tax deductions for businesses dealing with Schedule I and II substances) or for scientific research on the plant.

BUT what happens when the DEA says your recreational dispensary no longer exists because Schedule III drugs are only dispensable by a pharmacist…with FDA approval!

Look, I understand that change takes time.

As it stands, we have over 30 states that have a medical marijuana program in the United States.

Has that ever happened before in history?

The answer to that question is yes, yes it has. And you know what happened?

Ronald and Nancy Reagan came in and knocked all that shit on its side with the D.A.R.E. program. “Crack is whack!”

History has been shown to repeat itself in this country—that is my fear.

This is unprecedented, so we don’t know what’s going to happen next. For all we know the DEA might say, “Gotcha! We just wanted to distract you from everything else going on right now.”

So I’m not feeling good about it, and I won’t feel good about it until they release more details.

Sorry for being a hater, but I will always be a hater when it’s this plant versus the United States government.
